ABSTRACT Series of heterodinuclear organometallic complexes (L`)RPt-MLn 1-15 were prepared by the simple metathetical reactions of PtRX(L) (R = Me, Ph; X = Cl, NO3; L = cod, dpe) with anionic transition metal complexes (Na(ML`n), M = W, Mo, Mn, Fe, Co; L` = CO, Cp). X-ray structure analysis reveals that these complexes contain a direct bond between Pt and M. Geometries at Pt and W (or Mo) are square planar and piano stool, being consistent with their electronic structures of d8 for Pt(II) and d6 for W(0) or Mo(0), respectively, inspite of their formal oxidation state of one. An organic group on Pt smoothly transferred to transition metals M on thermolysis as well as by interaction with electron deficient olefins and CO to give methyl metal complexes and Pt(0) complexes. Possible mechanisms for the alkyl transfer reactions including direct and associative pathways are proposed from the kinetic investigation of the reactions.
