ABSTRACT

Adiabatic Nucleation Theory and its application to non-equilibrium liquid-vapour and liquid-solid phase transitions is reviewed. Isothermal driving forces or driving free energies are shown to be a misleading concept which should be substituted by the concept of non-isothermal increase of entropy. This suggests that nucleation, the starting phenomenon of a first order phase transition, should be an adiabatic phenomenon.
