ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of a 6-week dietary supplementation with grape (Vitis vinifera) seed and skin extract (preparation Panace-Vid 2000®) on the changes in redox parameters induced by maximal exercise in professional rowers. At the beginning of the study, the values of the selected redox parameters did not differ significantly between the supplemented group and the control group. In the supplemented group, the concentrations of the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) in the hemolysate samples collected before and 1 minute after a maximal exercise test were significantly lower after the supplementation period than before the study. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in the hemolysate samples collected before the exercise test and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity after the test were significantly lower after the supplementation period. No such changes in the TBARS concentrations and activities of GPx and SOD were observed in the control group. The results of this study indicate that supplementation with Vitis vinifera seed and skin extract enhances blood antioxidant system in professional rowers and limits exercise-induced oxidation processes.
