The isolation, structure determination, syntheses, conformational study and biological activity of a host specific phytotoxin alternariolide, are reviewed. The syntheses  of many analogs are also described. They were used to study the structure-activity relationship. The essential strategy for the synthesis of a medium-size cyclic dehydropeptide emerged from these syntheses.
