ABSTRACT The chemical nature of polyamines is briefly described as well as the mechanisms through which free polyamines conjugate to phenolics and macromolecules. The paper analyzes the most succesfully techniques for separating free and conjugated polyamines, mainly by high-performance liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoresis with an special emphasis in the derivatization procedures commonly used as the most appropriate for these techniques.
