ABSTRACT Near-UV and visible absorption spectra were obtained for radical cations of C6H5X (X =H, F and Cl), C6H5X (X = H, F, Cl, Br and I), styrene. β-methylstyrene and 1,2-dihydronaphthalene in γ-irradiated perfluoro-matrices containing corresponding parent molecules at liquid nitrogen temperature. Fluorescence spectra were also observed for radical cations of C6H5X (X = H, F, Cl and Br), styrene, β-methylstyrene and 1,2-dihydronaphthalene. Both absorption and emission were assigned to the transitions between two low lying π-1 states. The high frequency stretching and the low frequency ring distortion modes were found to be important in the vibrational structures of the spectra. Relaxation of excited radical cations are discussed briefly.
